Rodeo's contribution to cancer awareness reaches $8,200

Owyhee County Fair and Rodeo queen contestants Callie Ann Lehto, left, and Chyenne Ponder, third from left, sell 50/50 raffle tickets to the Eckhardt family from Boise during Thursday's Pink Night to fight cancer at the rodeo. Vicki Luna of Notus won $200 in the Thursday night drawing.

The Owyhee County Rodeo continued its partnership with Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center's breast cancer awareness campaign during the 2011 rodeo.  Thursday, Aug. 11 was Saint Alphonsus Pink Night where fans, contestants and rodeo board members were encouraged to wear pink as part of the Ridin' to Kick Cancer.
Rodeo queen contestants sold 50/50 tickets and pink bracelets to raise money that rodeo organizers said would stay in Owyhee County to help the community's cancer patients.
With the record $3,755 contributed to cancer awareness through this year's rodeo, Owyhee County Rodeo fans have raised more than $8,200 in the three years of the program.
Vicki Luna of Notus won $200 in the 50/50 drawing this year.
Also during this year's Thursday performance, rodeo board president Larry Corta and vice-president Dennis Pruett presented St. Al's with a $2,500 check representing funds raised in 2010. Betty Parker of the Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center Mobile Mammography Unit accepted the check with Nancy Finney.
Cancer awareness funds raised by the Ridin' to Kick Cancer promotion has steadily climbed since the program's inception. The inaugural year netted $2,000.
